Formation

Verb ます-stem + がてら / Noun + がてら

Usage

Expresses that the main action is performed while also doing another activity on the way or at the same time. The second action is secondary.

Example sentences

散歩がてら、コンビニに行ってきた。

I went to the convenience store while out for a walk.

買い物がてら、友達の家に寄った。

I stopped by my friend's house while doing shopping.

ドライブがてら、新しいレストランに行ってみた。

I tried a new restaurant while out on a drive.
