As soon as / the moment — immediate change of state
Formation
Verb (plain present) + なり
Usage
Expresses that as soon as one action occurs, the subject immediately enters a new state or performs another action. The subject is the same for both verbs.
Example sentences
彼は立ち上がるなり、部屋を出て行った。
He stood up and left the room immediately.
その知らせを聞くなり、彼は顔色を変えた。
The moment he heard the news, his expression changed.
彼女は家に帰るなり、自分の部屋に閉じこもった。
As soon as she got home, she locked herself in her room.
赤ちゃんは母親の顔を見るなり、泣き止んだ。
The moment the baby saw its mother's face, it stopped crying.
彼はお金を見るなり、目を輝かせた。
The moment he saw the money, his eyes lit up.
