Formation

Verb stem + ます (present), ました (past), ません (present negative), ませんでした (past negative)

Usage

The default polite form used in formal conversations, with strangers, superiors, and in writing. All Japanese verbs conjugate to these forms.

Example sentences

毎日、学校へ行きます。

I go to school every day.

昨日、映画を見ました。

I watched a movie yesterday.

タバコは吸いません。

I don't smoke.

宿題をしませんでした。

I didn't do my homework.

コーヒーを飲みますか？

Would you like some coffee?
