Summary

Identifies the grammatical subject. Also marks the object of certain verbs (likes, dislikes, ability).

Usage Rules

  • Marks the grammatical subject of a sentence
  • Used with question words: 誰が, 何が, どこが
  • Used with existence verbs: いる, ある
  • Used with potential verbs: できる, 見える, 聞こえる
  • Marks the object of liking/disliking: 好き, 嫌い, 上手, 下手
  • Used in subordinate clauses where は cannot appear
  • Introduces new information (answering 'who did it?')

Example Sentences

ねこがすきです。

I like cats.

だれが来ましたか?

Who came?

つくえの上に本がある。

There is a book on the desk.

わたしがやります。

I will do it (responding to 'who?').

日本語が話せます。

I can speak Japanese.

Common Mistake

Using が for topic instead of subject. が introduces new info; は marks known/topic info.
