Summary

Marks the direct object of a transitive verb. Also used with certain movement verbs along a path.

Usage Rules

  • Marks the direct object receiving the action
  • Pronounced 'o' despite being written を
  • Used with transitive verbs: 食べる, 読む, 書く, 見る
  • Used with movement verbs along a path: 道を歩く
  • Can be omitted in casual speech
  • Never used with intransitive verbs

Example Sentences

ごはんを食べます。

I eat rice.

本を読んでいる。

I'm reading a book.

日本語をべんきょうしています。

I'm studying Japanese.

みちをあるいてください。

Please walk along the path.

まどをあけてもいいですか?

May I open the window?

Common Mistake

Using を with intransitive verbs like いる, ある, 行く (use に or が instead).
