Should (general truth) / one should not — moral or natural truth
Formation
Verb (plain present) + ものだ / Verb (plain present) + ものではない
Usage
Expresses general truths, social norms, or things that naturally happen. Also used for nostalgic reminiscence (たものだ). Negative form ものではない means 'one should not'.
Example sentences
人の心はわからないものだ。
You can never understand another person's heart.
嘘をつくものではありません。
One should not tell lies.
子供の頃、よく川で泳いだものです。
When I was a child, I often swam in the river (nostalgic).
時間が経つのは早いものだ。
Time passes quickly (as it does).
約束は守るものです。
Promises should be kept.
