Formation

Verb (plain) + ものの / い-adjective + ものの / な-adjective + な + ものの

Usage

A formal expression similar to けど or のに. Used when the result contradicts the expectation. Often implies a sense of regret or unfulfillment.

Example sentences

留学したものの、全然日本語が話せなかった。

Although I studied abroad, I couldn't speak Japanese at all.

新しいスマホを買ったものの、使い方がわからない。

Although I bought a new phone, I don't know how to use it.

努力はしたものの、結果が出なかった。

Although I put in effort, no results came out.

合格したものの、希望の大学ではなかった。

Although I passed, it wasn't my preferred university.
