When / whenever — natural consequence

Formation

Verb (plain present) + と / い-adjective + と

Usage

Expresses that when A happens, B naturally or inevitably follows. Used for general truths, habits, and discoveries. The result clause cannot express will, request, or opinion.

Example sentences

春になると、桜が咲きます。

When spring comes, cherry blossoms bloom.

ここを押すと、電源が入ります。

If you press here, the power turns on.

勉強しないと、試験に落ちます。

If you don't study, you'll fail the exam.

北へ行くと、寒くなる。

As you go north, it gets colder.

窓を開けると、冷たい風が入ってきた。

When I opened the window, cold air came in.
