〜ようです / 〜みたいです

It seems / looks like — conjectural

Formation

Verb (plain) + ようです / い-adjective + ようです / な-adjective + な + ようです / Noun + の + ようです. みたい is the casual version.

Usage

Expresses a conjecture based on some evidence or observation. よう is more formal; みたい is more conversational.

Example sentences

誰かが来たようです。

It seems someone has come.

風邪を引いたみたいです。

It looks like I caught a cold.

この辺りは静かなようです。

This area seems quiet.

彼は日本人のようです。

He seems to be Japanese.

雨がやんだみたいだ。

It looks like the rain has stopped.
