〜んです / 〜のです

Explanatory / seeking explanation — giving context or emphasis

Formation

Plain sentence + んです (casual) / のです (formal). な-adjectives and nouns take な + んです/のです.

Usage

Used when giving an explanation, reason, or context. Also used when asking for an explanation. One of the most common patterns in spoken Japanese.

Example sentences

風邪を引いたんです。

I caught a cold (that's why).

どうしたんですか？

What happened?

日本語を勉強しているんです。

I'm studying Japanese (you see).

どこに行くんですか？

Where are you going?

学校が休みなんです。

School is closed (that's the situation).
